Indian American physicians unite to launch countrywide blood donation and stem cell registration campaign

 National AAPI Blood Donation Drives to celebrate India’s 75th year of independence. Dr. Gotimukula expressed delight over the launch of the new initiative. She said, “On the occasion of the 75th Independence Day of India, we the physicians of Indian origin serving every 7th patient in the United States, are excited to launch this unique and noble initiative and Stem Cell Drive”  in 75 cities across the United States”.

Dr. Meher Medavaram, head of AAPI’s Blood Donation Initiative, led the launch on August 7th in Chicago. Dr. Medavaram highlighted the other blood donation campaigns in the country. She said, “Several cities that have organized the Blood Donation Drive, include Dayton (OH); Oakbrook village (IL); Ridgeland, Mississippi;  Dallas (Tx), and Columbus (SC). Dozens of other cities have planned to organize similar events across the nation in the next few months”.

Dr. Ravi Kolli, AAPI President-Elect, encouraged everyone to donate blood to be part of mankind. Dr. Medavaram said that there is a need for blood every two seconds and that a single donation could save three lives. According to the media, around 21 million blood components are transfused in the US annually.

Dr. Gotimukula noted that everyone cannot donate blood at this moment, but 37% of the country’s citizens are eligible to donate. Dr. Gotiumuka highlighted the importance of blood donation during the pandemic. She also explained the reason for launching this initiative. She said, “The 3rd Covid Wave is causing increased ICU admissions again. There is a dire need for blood. Your friends or family may need blood someday. And this noble cause helps save many lives.”
