In place of the Conservatives was, Penny Mordaunt, a prominent cabinet minister and previous leader of the House of Commons, will stand. One of Mordaunt’s most significant accomplishments to date came in 2019, when she became the first female Defence Secretary in British history. In this role, she demonstrated her commitment to the UK’s national security and the well-being of its armed forces. Under her leadership, the Ministry of Defence implemented a number of important reforms. In recent years, Mordaunt has become a leading voice in the ongoing debate surrounding Brexit. As a committed Eurosceptic, she has advocated for a clean break from the European Union.

The Labour Party’s deputy leader and shadow levelling up secretary, Angela Rayner, will represent her party. Rayner’s political career began in 2015, when she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Ashton-under-Lyne. Since then, she has held various positions within the Labour Party, including Shadow Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The Liberal Democrats was represented by their deputy leader and health and social care spokesperson, Daisy Cooper. Cooper, who has a background in Commonwealth affairs and press accountability, was elected in 2019.

Lastly, Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Plaid Cymru, represented his party at the debate. A former journalist, Iorwerth has held various shadow minister roles since being elected to the Welsh Parliament in 2013, and became leader of Plaid Cymru in 2023.

Much of the attention and criticism was centered both the Labor party and the Conservative party from all the other candidates representing the other parties. Both the Penny Mordaunt and Angela Rayner also drew their main attacks on each other. On the topic of immigration however much of the criticism was drawn towards Nigel Farage.
